With the ever-increasing pace of fashion, celebrating the act of creation is a rare luxury. We saw it in the imperfectly patched textiles of Prada's spring/summer collection, and Jean-Paul Gaultier's recently announced decision to close his ready-to-wear line and focus on couture and fragrance. Locally, we have Penny Sage's minimal designs, made in New Zealand from beautiful silks and cottons. In the brand's first pop-up store above Flotsam & Jetsam, there will be a rotating exhibition of local female artists, including photographers Leilani Heather and Greta van der Star.
On display right now are textile designer and maker Marta Katarzyna Buda's handwoven wall hangings. Made from Laotian organic cotton and New Zealand wool, the folkloric pieces bring to mind 70s crafts, and are coloured with natural dyes such as ebony fruit, mango skin and rosewood bark. Available to buy from $150 to $480, until late October.
