Beachside resident Luca Vita, 10, and his family have collected abandoned jandals off Gisborne beaches for more than 10 years.
They started nailing them along the rail of the walkway to their beach-front house in Wainui in 2004 after finding some during a post-Rhythm and Vines music festival clean-up.
"Tonnes of people were on the beach and we did a tidy-up afterwards and found all sorts of rubbish and quite a few jandals," said Luca's father, Mike Vita.
Friends and passers-by began contributing to the jandal exhibition and there are now more than 200 on the steps railing.
"Every now and again, a mate gives a bagful and beach-goers and neighbours throw them up as well. People are always really curious and like to stop to take photos."
