Whenuapai: Look out! The Air Force is dropping in

Action stations in the air as parachutists practice for today's jump from a Royal New Zealand Air Force C-130 Hercules at the Whenuapai Air Show.

Mostly fine weather is forecast for the popular show which features a United States Air Force C-17 from Alaska, two Royal Australian Air Force F/A -18 Hornets and a Warbirds display. The mighty C-17 Globemaster III can transport up to 144 troops, 102 paratroops, or 48 stretchers.

The Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Graham Lintott, said the show included an exciting programme of ground and air activities.

It would give people the chance to see air operations up close, the support that goes on behind the scenes and, most importantly, the chance to meet and talk to Air Force staff.

He said the Air Force was proud to display the newly upgraded Boeing 757, described as a unique military strategic airlifter for the future.

On static display will be a French Air Force Casa CN-235, a RAAF C-130J and an Australian Border Protection Dash 8 Maritime Border Patrol aircraft.

Some lucky show visitors will be given Warbirds scenic flights in the afternoon.

The gates at the Whenuapai air base open at 9am. Entry is $5 and children under 10 years are free.
