KEY POINTS:
Main event
The garden needs the rain, and so do we. It provides an opportunity to check out Gondwana: Land of the Giants at Auckland Museum.
This live theatre performance takes you on a journey back through time to a land - a super-continent called Gondwana - where plants were as tall as buildings and dinosaurs walked the earth.
There are full-body puppets in a giant inflatable garden with dramatic lighting and eerie sound effects.
Performances sold out in Australia so bookings are highly recommended.
The show opens today and runs until January 27. $15 adults, $10 children, plus members' rates. Book on (09) 306-7098. The show runs twice a day, with some exceptions.
Family fun
If the kids are getting bored in Tairua (hard to believe, isn't it?) get along to Cory-wright Domain in Tokoroa Rd for a giant lolly-drop and decorated bike competition. The event is supported by taste food 2 go, and promises to be a lot of fun. It kicks off at 10.30am.
Going out
The Auckland Aces take on Wellington in a one-day international today from noon on No 2 ground at Eden Park. Come and support the local boys and try to pick the stars of the future.
Tip of the day
Phone your local council or check its website to find out which public spaces are covered by liquor bans over the summer. Often you are banned from carrying liquor as well as drinking it.
