Science, maths and technology are always changing and students want to know what are growth industries before they plan their studies.
Professor Peter Gluckman, director of the Liggins Institute, identifies several areas that need young achievers and have excellent opportunities.
He recognises the life sciences as a key area of future development.
Within the life sciences he identifies pharmaceutical development, environmental management, sustainable agriculture and biotechnology as vital areas of growth.
Professor Gluckman sees that research in these areas will primarily benefit the health and agricultural sectors in New Zealand.
He also says that new opportunities abound in information technology (IT) and IT-related areas.
Within Auckland University, the Liggins Institute is a multi-disciplinary medical research institute, committed to biomedical and clinical research in areas of major health importance.
