Jaime Dutton, 26, bar manager, came from England two years ago:
"I came here on a round-the-world trip, but liked it so much I decided to stay. The weather is good. It's quite like home, but more relaxed and people are friendlier. You have everything you want here."
Mary Lea'aetoa, training consultant, mid-20s, moved from the Cook Islands when she was 12:
"I came over with my grandparents. My parents were already here. There are more opportunities here in terms of education and jobs. New Zealand is where the money is. You come here to better yourself ... "
Satinder Kaur, bar manager, 47, came from India 19 years ago:
"My husband came here first, then I followed. It's a nice country. It's a safe country. It's a good place for kids to grow up and a good place for old people to live. Kiwis are very helpful."
Hone Rata, 30, of Ellerslie, a bar manager, originally from the Far North, said of NZ's changing ethnic makeup:
"It's a good thing. We have got to go with the flow as it moves from century to century. Other ethnicities shouldn't be feared. It's good to have different cultures living in New Zealand."
Dongmei Shi, student, 25, arrived from China three years ago:
"I came here to study, but I will apply for permanent residency. I think the weather here is good and the people and the culture are really nice. People's behaviour patterns are simple and they treat each other well."
