A man has been found dead in Whangarei in the early hours of this morning, in unexplained circumstances.
The man, believed to be in his 30s, was found unresponsive by a member of the public on Bank St, between Cameron St and Vine St, shortly after 3am, police said.
Ambulance and police staff were called to the scene, but found the man was dead.
"The matter is being treated as an unexplained death, and has been referred to the coroner," police said.
The man's identity had not yet been established, police said.
