Local man Ravindra Nair’s security camera captured a hooded man slashing tyres, which was shared on social media.
Locals are outraged, with at least 11 people claiming to have been affected just last week.
Locals are outraged and police are seeking information after a spate of tyre-slashings in Auckland’s northern suburbs including at least one by a hooded man caught on camera.
Ravindra Nair told the Herald he was overseas on a business trip when a man, whom he believes to be a local teenager, slashed his tyres in Whangaparāoa on Thursday night.
He said he had heard from at least 11 neighbours and locals in Whangaparāoa and Ōrewa who claimed their tyres were slashed in the same week.
In the video, the man, dressed in a grey hoodie, black pants, and white sneakers, pauses as he crouches behind the car before striking the tyre.
A loud hissing sound is then heard as the man runs off.
Nair said, “You can see in the video, it looked like he was recording [the offending] to post somewhere. But I don’t know if he’s doing it for [social media platform] TikTok or just trying to shock his mates.”
He said he had passed on all video footage and the name and address of the man he believed had done it to police.
Police told the Herald they received a report about this incident on Thursday night, and were assessing it for next steps.
They also confirmed a separate report of damaged tyres at an Ōrewa address overnight between Wednesday and Thursday.
“We’d encourage anyone with information that will assist our enquiries, to make contact with police.”
The video was posted to social media, where other residents on social media claimed their tyres had also been slashed.
One told the Herald they had also gone to police.
A comment labelled the slasher “senseless”, while another said it was “just unacceptable behaviour”.
