KEY POINTS:
The Whangamata police station was left damaged after being rammed by a vehicle early this morning.
Police said the vehicle -- possibly a light truck -- reversed into the building at about 1.40am before driving west on Hetherington Rd.
An officer was in the building at the time but could not get out in time to identify the vehicle.
Police said a light coloured small truck with road cones in the rear tray was seen earlier in the night driving around Whangamata.
The occupants, wearing reflector jackets, were seen talking to a pedestrian on Hetherington Rd at one stage and police were urging that person to contact them.
Police said the station was left with broken windows and window frames and superficial scratches and dents to the exterior and interior.
