Westminster Abbey to hold Chch memorial

Westminster Abbey will hold an official service later this month to mark the devastating earthquake that struck Christchurch on February 22.

The service in London on March 27 would reflect on the loss of life suffered as a result of the earthquake, and the huge impact on the city, its people, and those from around the world affected by the tragedy, a spokesman for the Dean of Westminster said.

The service would acknowledge the generosity, sympathy and support New Zealand has received from the United Kingdom since the earthquake hit.

Victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan on March 11 would also be remembered.

The Prince of Wales would attend, and senior representatives of the British government, British armed services and countries closely associated with the disaster were also invited.

The service was being organised with the New Zealand High Commission, New Zealand government agencies and community groups in London.

Proceeds from a collection after the noon service will go towards the Government's Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.

A vigil was held at Westminster on March 2.
