West Auckland fire station up for sale

A fiery new property has just entered the Auckland housing market - and it could be the perfect answer for house hunters after something unique.

Prospective buyers out to find their dream home will now be able to view a fire station in west Auckland as a potential option.

The disused station on the corner of Waipani Rd and Te Atatu Rd on the Te Atatu Peninsula has been listed for sale by tender.

According to the property's information memorandum prepared by Bayleys Real Estate, the mainly-brick station building was built in 1992.

It has concrete foundations and floors, and for those with a love of large vehicles "fire truck access via roller doors."

The total land area covers about 2046 square metres, and is close to Te Atatu Peninsula Primary School and Rutherford College.

However potential buyers may be disappointed to hear the one-storey station does not come with a fireman's pole.

New Zealand Fire Service national property manager Dominic Hare said the station had been put up for sale because its facilities were no longer needed.

"A state of the art $4.5 million fire station at 299 Te Atatu Road was opened in June 2011 to replace the ageing existing site.

"No more than a handful of decommissioned fire station property sales have taken place over the last 10 years, with those properties typically replaced with relocated modern facilities that better meet New Zealand Fire Service operational requirements," Mr Hare said.

The Government valuation of the property was $600,000 at July 2011. Sale by tender is due to take place on Thursday 19 September.
