Twenty-one fire engines, 70 firefighters and three helicopters worked to contain a fierce bush fire in West Auckland today.
A bush fire covering 9.5 hectares of bush on Cornwallis Rd, near Huia, has been contained, a Fire Service spokesman said.
Helicopters have now been stood down, but fire crews will remain at the scene on overnight standby.
The fire service moved crew in a bid to stop the flames from spreading on to a threatened property.
Emergency services were alerted to the fire at 3.20pm.
