A crash involving a motorcyclist has closed part of State Highway 2 north of Wellington, to traffic heading into the city.
Police said emergency services were still at crash scene.
The motorcyclist involved has been taken to hospital in a serious condition.
Southbound traffic was being diverted to the Melling link.
"The road will be closed for approximately two hours while the police serious crash unit complete a scene investigation. Police ask that motorists avoid the area if possible."
