Wellington Zoo's much-loved sun bear has died.
The 21-year-old Malayan bear named Chomel has been euthanised after suffering a suspected stroke.
She collapsed in her enclosure on Tuesday, but despite immediate veterinary attention and overnight monitoring she failed to respond to treatment.
Spokesman Mauritz Basson says Chomel mothered three cubs while at the zoo and was for a time the only successful breeding female in Australasia.
