Wellington Zoo's new home for Malayan sun bears and Sumatran tigers will open to the public this weekend.
The new Asia Precinct was officially opened by Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown last Friday, but tomorrow the public will be able to check out the new $2.5 million development themselves.
It will house the new ASB Malayan Sun Bear exhibit, home to Sean and Sasa, and the redeveloped Pub Charity Sumatran Tiger exhibit, home to Cantik and Rokan.
"We see the Asia Precinct as part of Wellington Zoo's contribution towards Wellington 2040, where we can demonstrate environmental leadership by providing a new home for these wonderful animals," the zoo's chief executive Karen Fifield said.
"We're also excited to have visitors get closer than ever to the Sumatran Tigers," she said. "These critically endangered animals help to raise awareness of their wild relatives, who we support through 21st Century Tiger, a conservation organisation which contributes directly to wild tiger projects."
