Workers in Wellington have the highest average wage, a breakdown of website advertising shows.
Trade Me jobs manager Jimmy McGee said the study of 30,000 jobs listed on the website during the last quarter of 2007 revealed Wellington workers were paid on average $65,869.
Auckland city workers were second best on $61,075 followed by Timaru ($60,274)
Worst paid locations were Southland ($41,224) followed by Palmerston North ($42,636) and Napier ($42,786)
Doctors were the highest paid profession, receiving an average salary of $123,850.
" IT jobs took the next three positions with technology architects, IT sales people and IT project managers all being paid on average over $100,000. Project managers in construction ($94,634) rounded out the top five paid professions," he said.
Kitchen hands ($29,625) data entry staff ($30,727), waiting staff ($30,826), cleaners ($31,964) and caregivers ($31,967) received the wooden spoon in the pay race, showing up as the five worst paid professions.
Based on the number of applications per job, Wanganui ended up as the toughest place to recruit staff, followed by four other provincial areas - Thames, Marlborough, Tasman and Masterton.
