A police officer’s attempt to stop a fleeing driver with road spikes backfired when the patrol car following behind appeared to run over them.
The Herald has viewed footage of the Wellington incident, which is publicly available to view on the social media platform TikTok.
The 36-second clip shows an officer standing on the side of the road waiting for the fleeing driver.
As it approaches they pull the spikes towards them to activate them.
The fleeing driver missed the obstacle but the police car following drives over the top of them.
The clip was posted on social media yesterday.
Police confirmed that at 1.30am on Friday a stolen vehicle was observed “driving dangerously” on Wainui Hill Rd.
“Police signalled for the vehicle to stop but it did not, and instead fled north into the Hutt Valley,” a police spokesperson said today.
“Police maintained observations on the vehicle. Two attempts to spike the vehicle were made on Oxford Tce, one of which was successful.
“The vehicle was subsequently located, abandoned, on Blue Mountains Rd.”
Inquiries are ongoing to locate the driver.
Police would not comment on whether the patrol car was damaged in the incident.

Emergency services were called to the scene around 7.30pm.
