Trains between Wellington and Ngaio have been suspended until further notice following a landslip just south of Crofton Downs.
The slip, which occurred this afternoon, had not resulted in any injuries to passengers and crew, Kiwi Rail communications advisor David Miller said.
The train was due to be inspected by Kiwi Rail staff for any damage.
Tranz Metro was organising bus replacements for travellers, but said passengers using the Johnsonville Line should expect delays.
