KEY POINTS:
Wellington motorists are being warned that police will be out in force monitoring speed, drink driving and the use of seatbelts this holiday weekend.
Police spokeswoman Kay Calder said a visible campaign by highway patrol and the road policing unit would be out in force.
"They'll be out there to minimise delays and more importantly they will try to ensure people get to their holiday destination safely," Ms Calder said.
She said there were only two routes heading north of Wellington and both would be congested by 3.00pm.
She said State Highway One through Levin and State Highway Two through Masterton would also be thick with traffic on Monday from about 2pm onwards.
"People can expect delays," she said.
