Police are investigating an alleged family harm incident in Wellington in which a man was tasered, leaving him in critical condition.
Officers were called to a bus stop on Cockayne Rd, Khandallah, at 12pm on Thursday after reports of a man wielding a “bladed object”, damaginga bus shelter and threatening a woman who had a small child with her.
When police arrived, they tried to engage with the 32-year-old man.
A Taser was used and the man fell and hit his head. He was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital, where he is in critical condition.
The woman involved in the incident had a minor injury, thought likely to be from the bladed object, and was treated. The child was not hurt, and both are now being supported.
“This was a volatile and unpredictable incident where there was an immediate threat to life,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch.
“We would like to thank the members of the public who called 111 without hesitation.”
Police know others may have seen or helped during the incident but have not yet come forward.
