A diving incident near Wellington has claimed the life of a man in his early thirties.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident at Makara about 11.30am yesterday.
An ambulance spokeswoman said the man was transported to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition.
A Capital and Coast District Health Board spokesman confirmed the man passed away in the early afternoon.
