Wellington bus users may have to wait some time for a ride to work today.
NZ Bus has 18 buses out of action after failing police safety checks yesterday. More testing is due to be carried out today.
The safety checks follow a similar crackdown earlier this year in which 11 buses were ordered off the road, leaving thousands of people stranded.
Senior Sergeant Willie Roy said the buses will now have to get new certificates of fitness before they will be allowed back on the road, but he could not confirm how long that process will take.
"It will depend on how quickly the company acts on this given it's an issue that has been raised previously with them," he said.
