The Government';s controversial welfare reforms are one step closer tonight with the legislation passing its first reading in the house.
Despite four of the five Maori Party MPs changing their minds and deciding to vote against the Government, National had the numbers to get it through to select committee stage.
Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says the changes are about building a future for New Zealand.
"Do we want a society that teaches its children by example that the path to a better, more prosperous and fulfilling life is through work not welfare? I believe the answer is yes."
The bill passed 65 votes to 57.
