The wacky, the weird and the wonderful met up at the Auckland Museum carpark in the Domain last Sunday for the inaugural running of the Big Funday Out pseudo rally organised by Roger Phillips.
It was a celebration of automotive diversity, including character cars, charisma cars, complicated cars, confusing cars, clean cars and crazy cars.
From the museum everyone made their way to Kariotahi Beach in South Auckland for evaluation, judging and a spot of gymkhana driving to test both the car's and the driver's skill at negotiating a series of orange cones.
Points were awarded for not fulfilling a design function, lowest power to weight ratio, highest fuel consumption, most alarming cornering profile, not making it to the event, not making it home, largest oil stain and least popular choice to name but a few.
After a short trip back to Lotus Cars Waiuku, the drivers and their passengers were treated to a fine lunch put on by the local Lions Club.
The winner on the day was the Trekka, which most impressively won the gymkhana on the black sand of Kariotahi.
