KEY POINTS:
The MetService is predicting a mixed bag of weather for Queen's Birthday weekend, but says there should be opportunities for most to enjoy the outdoors at some point.
Showers are predicted for the west and north of the North Island on Friday, and in the west of both islands on Saturday and Sunday.
A cold southerly is expected to bring showers to the east and south of the South Island.
Monday is expected to be drier in most places, MetService weather ambassador Bob McDavitt said.
"During this Queen's Birthday holiday the weather in many places will be good for getting outdoors, though not all the time", he said.
The relatively dry and cool forecast continued the recent trend as the country faces the onset of winter.
Mr McDavitt said several places around the country had received less than 10mm of rain during the month of May, including Timaru, Port Taharoa in the Waikato and Nelson.
June 1 marks the first day of the winter months.
