KEY POINTS:
A weekend crash on a Tauranga roundabout has claimed a second life.
Kayla Tait Rose, 14, of Welcome Bay was critically injured in the Sunday night crash and died in hospital about 3pm yesterday.
The driver, Joshua Rodney Garner, 24, died at the scene.
His 14-year-old sister and passenger, Samantha, was in a critical but stable condition in Starship Hospital, the Bay of Plenty Times reported.
Both girls attended Tauranga Girls' College and principal Pauline Cowens described them as "lovely young women" and said they were "very well liked".
The cause of the one car crash, at the roundabout where State Highway 2 meets Maungatapu Rd, was under investigation.
Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said he was waiting for toxicology results before he could comment on whether or not alcohol was involved.
"We do know he was travelling far too fast for the conditions, and that speed is a significant factor in the crash," he said.
Police believe Garner lost control of his Holden vehicle exiting the roundabout. The car skidded off the road, went up the kerb and hit a large high voltage power pole.
Mr Garner died instantly.
Police said Garner had just picked up his sister and Kayla from a church function before the crash.
