A young woman was killed and a baby suffered moderate injuries in a single car crash near Napier about midday.
The car had veered off State Highway 50, between Hastings and Napier, and ended up in a ditch, Inspector Marty Edghill of central police communications said.
A woman in her early to mid 20s died and a baby was injured, he told NZPA.
The baby was taken to hospital in a moderate condition, St John central communications team leader Anita Halbert said.
There was no one else in the car and no other vehicles involved in the crash. Police were investigating the cause.
Meanwhile, speed and impatience were contributing factors in a crash which killed one man and left another injured in Papatoetoe yesterday, Counties Manukau Senior Sergeant Ian Brenchley told NZPA.
The man died after a car crashed into a traffic light pole about 9am yesterday in Great South Road, Papatoetoe.
The car mounted the kerb on two left wheels and was driven along the pavement for about 30m before it hit the traffic lights.
Two people -- the driver and a front seat passenger -- were trapped in the Subaru station wagon when emergency services arrived. Both occupants were taken to Middlemore Hospital but the passenger's condition deteriorated rapidly and he died a short time after they arrived.
The driver, who suffered only minor injuries, was released from hospital last night.
The serious crash unit is investigating.
