The official road toll for the long weekend stands at one this morning after a vehicle careered off the Summit Road in the Cashmere Hills above Christchurch last night.
A passing jogger found the car, which had travelled about 100 metres down the hillside about 1km east of the Sugar Loaf transmitter station at 6.50pm.
The jogger, occupants from a passing car, and emergency services were unable to save the life of the driver, who was the only person in the car.
Police said no other vehicle was involved, but they would like to hear from witnesses.
They would particularly like to speak to the jogger who came across the accident.
Two others people died in separate accidents involving trucks earlier yesterday.
A motorcyclist was killed after a collision with a truck near Te Kuiti, and a 59-year-old woman was killed when the vehicle in which she was travelling collided with a truck near Gisborne.
Police have warned drivers to take special care as weather conditions are forecast to deteriorate, with severe gales expected over central parts of the country followed up by a southerly blast.
