The Clutha River has been infected with Didymosphenia geminata, the weed also known as rock snot.
Otago Regional Council compliance manager Alison Lane said yesterday that it had been found in the Upper Clutha, near the Luggate Bridge.
It was possible the weed could take hold of the whole river, which runs for 338km, but areas such as the Lower Clutha were less likely to be affected.
