KEY POINTS:
So what happened to all our thunderstorms yesterday? Well they missed most of the main centres and developed across parts of the Waikato, western Bay of Plenty and to the east of Great Barrier Island. Our new Auckland weather forecasting service (which is 100 per cent independent of MetService forecasts) never predicted thunderstorms for Auckland. I have to admit though - we did predict showers and most of Auckland had none. This is a great example of unstable weather patterns - the air was very unstable over the upper North Island and that can often make forecasting tricky, especially in Summer when the weather tends to be slower and more isolated. But the great thing about Weather Watch's new forecasting product is the ability to update it quickly when we think something has changed. We dropped showers by the afternoon and just said it would be mostly cloudy - with sunny spells in the evening, which was bang on for much of the city. This weather pattern that northern New Zealand has been sitting under for the past few days is certainly an unpredictable one but it looks as though the next few days may be a little more settled...and therefore predictable. To access our new, independent, Auckland weather forecasts click here. And for those who couldn't access the long range forecasts yesterday (when you click on 'more') that bug has now been fixed!
So - lets not focus totally on Auckland...what are our main weather features today right across New Zealand? With more instability just to the east of Northland and Coromandel there's still the risk of some afternoon heating creating big showers today...
Thunderstorms?
There's possibly the chance of one around Northland but to be honest today is looking even less likely than yesterday.
Heavy Showers?
Again, mostly around Northland but possibly around the Coromandel Peninsula, and East Cape this afternoon.
Sun?
More sun today than yesterday for a number of centres...the cloudiest areas will be Gisborne, Wairoa, Napier, Hastings and Invercargill.
Temps:
Most places in the low to mid 20s today.
Severe weather?
Possibly this weekend - we have a big low moving in and that could driving in some heavy rain over the South Island and maybe strong winds over central New Zealand.
Big Day Out Weather
Tomorrow we'll take a closer look at the Big Day Out weather forecast with a detailed breakdown of the day's temperatures from 9am onwards and the chance of any showers. Also - what will the temperature be inside the stadium? We're predicting it could be around 40 degrees under clear skies, no shade, and very little wind. Check back here tomorrow for a full break down.
Next Update: Thursday morning.
