Weather warnings issued for coastal areas

Strong winds are expected to hit parts of Auckland tomorrow, with MetService issuing warnings for coastal areas overnight tonight.

A strong north-west wind over the region meant warnings for areas such as the Hauraki Gulf and the Coromandel Coast, said MetService meteorologist Rob Kerr.

Those further inland would be spared the full force of the gusts.

"In terms of the land that should be sheltered, so just moderate to fresh winds," said Mr Kerr.

By Tuesday afternoon the harsh north-westerlies are due to give way to westerlies and some showers, according to MetService.

Throughout the week most of the country should brace for more wind and more rain as several fronts move across New Zealand.

"It's quite a busy week in terms of weather," said Mr Kerr.

"Areas affected by heavy rain will be the western parts of both islands but strong winds could hit most areas."

Severe weather warnings were in place in many parts of the South Island today.
