Two drivers and their passengers escaped with only minor injuries after careering into each other near the top of the Rimutaka Hill Rd on Saturday in high winds and driving rain.
Featherston fire brigade volunteers, who had barely returned from the Breadcraft fire call-out in Masterton, were first on the scene just after 4pm.
The treacherous conditions caught out another driver shortly afterwards, in a minor nose-to-tail at the base of the hill on the Featherston side.
And to add to the afternoon's woes on the hill, Facebook users reported a truck and trailer broke down on the southbound lane of the hill a short while later.
