Several road snowfall warnings have also been issued.
LINDIS PASS:
Snow showers are possible about the summit overnight tonight. Between 11pm Monday and 4am Tuesday, up to 1cm of snow could accumulate near the summit.
MILFORD ROAD:
Rain or showers are expected over the road this evening and the snow level is expected to lower overnight to about 400m. Between midnight Monday and
9am Tuesday, 1-2cm of snow could accumulate on the road above 500m, mainly south of The Divide.
DUNEDIN TO WAITATI HIGHWAY:
Snow showers are expected overnight tonight through to early Tuesday afternoon above 200m. Between midnight Monday and 2pm Tuesday, 1-2cm of snow may accumulate on the road above 300m. However, there is a low chance of heavier snowfalls between about 6am and midday Tuesday when 5-10cm of snow may accumulate.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected over much of the North Island today, as a cold front is forecast for the south of the country.
The MetService said an unstable air mass would bring showers to the upper North Island throughout the day and there is an associated low risk of isolated thunderstorms in Auckland, Waikato and Coromandel Peninsula this morning.
Those thunderstorms could also affect the Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and northern Hawke's Bay this afternoon and into the evening.
"Any thunderstorms that develop have the potential to bring localised heavy rain of 10 to 20mm an hour and small hail,'' the MetService said.
A cold front is forecast to move over the South Island later today and into this evening, bringing with it a low risk of thunderstorms to Fiordland and Stewart Island.
Aucklanders can expect a high of 15C today and an overnight low of 10C. There will be showers - with a chance of heavy rain this morning - which will clear in the evening.
Whangarei also has showers today, as does Hamilton, Tauranga, New Plymouth and Napier.
Most areas have similar temperatures - 15C - save for Wellington, which has a 12C high.
Overnight temperatures are, however, much chillier - dropping to between 2C to 6C in the North Island.
Further south, showers are also expected, but a few areas will enjoy fine spells today.
Those in Christchurch are in for a mostly cloudy and fine day, with southwesterly winds. There is a high of 11C and an overnight low of 0C in the Garden City.
Nelson also has fine spells - with a chance of morning showers - and a high of 13C.
Dunedin, which has a high of 11C, and Queenstown (8C) will both get the odd morning shower, clearing to fine spells this afternoon.

People in Invercargill will see showers turning to rain this evening and fresh southwesterly winds, a high of 11C and an overnight low of 3C.
