Heavy rain is expected in places as a series of fronts sweep the country today.
MetService said a complex trough moving across the country would likely bring snow to the hills and heavy rain to the eastern North Island tomorrow.
Much of the severe weather would hit the eastern North Island from tomorrow, as a low pressure system moving across Auckland tracked southeast over the weekend.
"It's pretty messy across central and northern New Zealand this weekend," MetService meteorologist Tom Adams said.
Strong southeasterly winds would buffet the east coast as far south as Wellington from Sunday into next week, reaching speeds of about 100km/h in the Cook Strait.
