KEY POINTS:
Approximately 200 people have braved strong winds and wet conditions to attend the dawn service at Waitangi in the Far North.
There was heavy rain overnight, but it held off for the service itself. A number of politicians are attending the services. National Party leader John Key was the only one who took the opportunity to address the media.
There was standing room only in the upper marae. A protester was ushered off the property after being allowed to have her say.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast for the rest of today, and some events may have to be cancelled. However the 10am church service is expected to go ahead as scheduled.
Tens of thousands of people are expected to turn out for various events being held around the country.
