KEY POINTS:
Heavy rain in the Wellington region contributed to several crashes overnight, as well as causing slips and flooding, and police are warning motorists to be cautious.
Inspector Steve Darroch said a crash on State Highway 58 between Upper Hutt and Porirua this afternoon was followed by at least one nose-to-tail crash, causing disruptions to traffic flows.
Several other traffic incidents in the region have been reported.
In the Wellington suburb of Johnsonville there were reports of water up to a metre deep on one street.
There were also reports of flooding and slips in the Wellington city area, Mr Darroch said.
"Police advise all motorists to slow right down and drive to the conditions and keep following distances appropriate for the conditions."
Dry conditions before the rain started was worsening the effect of the downpour, Mr Darroch said.
