KEY POINTS:
If designing makeup for an individual show is tough, can you imagine creating looks for more than one designer in a show?
That was the challenge faced by the creative teams for the Verge Breakthrough show today. It's no mean feat to find a look that all the designers are happy with and that goes with all the clothes.
Mineral makeup was the first step in today's look - the powder provides great luminous coverage and gives the models' skin a well-earned break; the cakey makeup usually required for shows looks great but can make models' skin suffer after being removed and reapplied several times a day.
Following that was a smokey eye, accented with golds and rose golds for "extra definition, countour and to add warmth" according to head makeup artist Nikki Lovrich.
Black pencil was smudged in for extra depth. Lovrich called it a "Debbie Harry" eye.
Sculpted cheek bones and nude lips finish off the look (and changed to melon lips, this season's "it colour" for the final designer).
It's a surprisingly wearable look that still had impact on the runway.
I also learnt a couple of makeup artist's tricks backstage - the first is to hold a big fluffy brush under eyes when applying darker shadows, it catches any wayward particles of colour.
The second is holding a cotton bud behind your lashes as you apply mascara, it stops you getting any on your eyelids. You have their permission to try it at home!
