AUCKLAND - Burglars have stolen up to five firearms from Dargaville Police Station in Northland early this morning.
The offenders also stole police equipment, drugs and a police traffic vehicle, which has been found burnt out about 2km from the police station.
Northland Police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett said the break-in happened sometime between 1am and 5.30am this morning, when the car was found.
She told NZPA that police had yet to do a full stocktake to discover exactly what had been stolen.
"We're still going through the station to see what's missing," she said.
It was unclear exactly what types of firearm had been stolen, but she said there were no more than four or five firearms missing.
Police were also trying to find out how the burglars got into the station as there were no obvious signs as to how they broke in, Ms Kennett said.
"We're asking anyone from the public who saw a yellow and blue road police car between 1am and 5.30am to contact police," she said.
