New Zealand peacekeepers in East Timor hope a discovery by the Indonesian Army will bring them a step closer to the killers of Private Leonard Manning.
The Indonesian Army intercepted a militia group on Friday afternoon near the West-East Timor border and recovered a rifle similar to the one carried by 24-year-old Private Manning.
Defence Force spokesman Captain Mark Richards said until the weapon is examined thoroughly, it is all speculation.
Private Manning was killed in a gunfight with militiamen on July 24 near the border with West Timor.
