Medium-pacer Jared Watt produced outstanding figures as Red Star had the better of the first day's play in their Bidwell Cup senior men's inter-club match with Greytown on Saturday.

Play at Masterton's Queen Elizabeth Park Oval was delayed for more than two hours because of the overnight and morning rain and Greytown batted first, being all out for 101 of which top order batsman Tim Lucas made 28.

Watt was clearly the star of a steady Red Star attack, his 6-44 demonstrating his good control of line and length.

Red Star had reached 30-2 in reply by stumps with Wairarapa rep Harry Clinton-Baker, an acquisition from Rathkeale College, making a breezy 20.

Marist Old Boys seconds claimed an easy victory over arch rivals Lansdowne seconds in their open grade fixture played at the Park Sportsground.

Lansdowne batted first and reached 191-7.Top scorer was Nathan Robinson with 45

A 140-run partnership for the third wicket between A. Stephen (95) and Chris Jones (51 not out) paved the way for the Old Boys' win, the target being reached after 36.1 overs with just three wickets down.

Meanwhile, Wairarapa have accumulated just two points after the opening two series of matches in the zone two Hawke Cup qualifying competition.

Hawke's Bay, who Wairarapa meet next weekend, lead with 20 points, followed by Manawatu 17, Taranaki 7, Wanganui 7, Wairarapa 2 and Horowhenua-Kapiti 1.
