Watson takes show to frozen continent

Talkback host Danny Watson is taking his show to the bottom of the world.

The Newstalk ZB personality will broadcast live from Antarctica for three days next week.

Watson, who hosts the 12-4pm show, is heading to the frozen continent on Monday, and will broadcast his shows from Wednesday to Friday live from New Zealand's Scott Base.

NZME. radio general manager of talk Dallas Gurney said the opportunity came about after the network contacted Antarctica New Zealand.

"We were offered the opportunity and we thought why not? It's a great way for us to build a relationship where the New Zealand public can be more in touch with Scott Base and the Antarctic, not just on a scientific level but also on a personal level," said Mr Gurney.

One of the roles of Antarctica NZ, which supports research and conservation in the far-flung region, is to raise public awareness.

Watson said a lot of technical preparation had been put in by the network.

"NZME. has provided us with all the tech we need to make this happen. Before the internet it would have been impossible to do a broadcast-quality show from Antarctica.

"What the internet has given us is the ability to broadcast from anywhere in the world at any time," he said.

As well as hosting the talkback show, Watson will also tag along with the Scott Base team on a number of activities, including spending a night in an ice cave and possibly also travelling to Mt Erebus.
