KEY POINTS:
Aucklanders look set to get more open space and more industrial space than originally planned in a new inner-city waterfront development.
Auckland City Council and Auckland Regional Council said the 36ha Wynyard Quarter plan would now include 7ha of public open space instead of the 3.5ha shown in original concept plans.
"In early 2006 the overwhelming call from people in Auckland was for more open space in Wynyard Quarter," Auckland Mayor Dick Hubbard said.
"We listened to Aucklanders, increased the amount of open space and people are happy with what we have done."
Mr Hubbard said the industrial area would also be increased from 4.5ha to 8ha.
"A working waterfront is a unique point of difference for Auckland compared with other waterfront developments around the world," Mr Hubbard said.
"However, these industries are not just a tourist attraction, they are important to the economy of the city in providing jobs and contributing to GDP."
About 600 submissions were made to the original plans for developing a prime area in which the most notable landmark at present is a tank farm.
