An advisory group has been established to look at redeveloping the Auckland waterfront from the Viaduct Harbour to the harbour bridge.
The Auckland Waterfront Advisory Group will spend next year producing a blueprint for the area, including Westhaven Marina and the tank farm.
The tank farm is now zoned for port-related industry and, because of the storage of hazardous goods in the area, is regarded as unsuitable for housing, retail and commercial purposes.
The group has been set up by major landowners in the area, Viaduct Harbour Holdings, Ports of Auckland and Americas Cup Village. Infrastructure Auckland, owner of Americas Cup Village and 80 per cent shareholder in Ports of Auckland, is also involved.
Property consultant John Whitehead has been appointed project director to oversee the 20-year blueprint with help from six architects and urban planners. International urban planner Malcolm Latham, from Sydney, has been appointed chairman of the group.
The group plans to work closely with the Auckland City Council and seek public opinions.
