The water situation in the Tararua District is grim and has led to forceful pleas by the district council for people to save water.
A total hosing ban is in place for Pahiatua and Woodville and water restrictions have been imposed in Eketahuna, Akitio, Norsewood and Dannevirke.
Scorching weather hasseen river flows fall away drastically during the last few days.
According to Tararua District Council utilities manager Dave Watson, water management is becoming increasingly urgent.
"In a move to stay within permitted water takes, a total hosing ban - effective immediately - now applies in Pahiatua and Woodville, while water restrictions remain for Eketahuna, Akitio and Norsewood.
"Dannevirke remains on alternate-day water restriction," Mr Watson said.
The council is urging people to take water conservation/management measures seriously and is encouraging all households to make a concerted effort to use water sparingly - regardless of where they are in the district.
To help people with water-saving techniques, the council has information posted on its website www.tararuadc.govt.nz/wisewithwater
