Watch: White-knuckle landing at Wellington Airport in midst of storm

A plane passenger has filmed the bumpy and battered landing at Wellington Airport in the middle of a bitter storm and gale-force winds today.

The footage, posted on Twitter this morning by a user calling himself Time Lord, shows the flight being buffeted by strong winds.

The gusts have affected flights in and out of the capital as wind speeds reached up to 109km/h at the airport - and up to 167km/h at Mt Kaukau.

Air New Zealand said all jet services were still operating.

However Wellington Airport said smaller regional flights were suspended until the weather eased.

"We recognise that will be an inconvenience for those wishing to get to their destinations. Once conditions improve, we will be working with the airlines to ensure we clear the backlog as soon as possible."

Travellers are advised to check with their airline for up to date information.

A caller to Newstalk ZB this morning said their Jetstar flight managed to land in Wellington, but the problem on board was that there weren't enough sick bags.

"You would think on a day like this they would have probably stocked up on them, but no."

Earlier this morning, a false fire alarm at about 5.30am forced an evacuation of the airport terminal.

The alarm was caused by a car in the valet area hitting the fire system.
