Torrential rain has hit the capital today causing floods and closing major routes in and out of Wellington. Homes have been evacuated and landslides have battered the landscape.
Tourists are meanwhile being evacuated from Kaikoura in the South Island. Yesterday it was estimated 1200 visitors were in the area, 600 of which were taking refuge at a welfare station in the town.
