Onekawa Plunket are grateful they won't be facing another harsh Hawke's Bay summer without a shade sail.

Local Hawke's Bay company Charman Motor Trimmers and Upholsters came to the rescue after hearing thieves had made away with the original shade sail.

Charman Motor Trimmers and Upholsterers Canvas Fabricator, Simon Murphy says: "Basically we saw the article in the Herald and we made the original shade sail down there so we got a bit offended that someone had pinched it."

So they donated a new shade sail - complete with Plunket branding as a deterrent.

They can cost thousands to make - and then there's the labour to get them installed.

Napier Plunket Community Support Co-ordinator Karyn Teddy says the company could easily have left Plunket to install the shade sail themselves.

"But he said he would come back and they will do maintenance on it, they will look after it kind of thing, they want to see us cared for."

And - the generosity doesn't stop there.

The Local Focus video reached a firm in Wellington which also offered a sail.

And - a man in Timaru was so moved by the plight of Onekawa Plunket - he sent them a new sail in the post.

"The fact that we did have so many offers of those who wanted to support is pretty amazing," Mrs Teddy says.

With an extra sail on their hands - Onekawa Plunket want to share the community spirit - donating one of them to Flaxmere Plunket - which fell victim to thieves about two years ago.

Hastings Plunket Community Support Co-ordinator Audrey Taloa says they are rapt.

"Totally unexpected and we're really grateful."

The team at Flaxmere Plunket are now hoping someone will come forward to install the donated sail shade for them.
