KEY POINTS:
An elderly woman who survived a massive stroke and a prolonged attack by hundreds of wasps has been moved out of the high dependency unit at Wairarapa Hospital.
Mary Everitt, 85, collapsed onto a wasps' nest after suffering a stroke while gardening at her Masterton home.
Neighbours and ambulances officers were unable to help Mrs Everitt as enraged wasps swarmed over her body.
The attack lasted half an hour, before firefighters in full protective gear and breathing masks arrived to deter the wasps using a hose.
Hospital spokeswoman Jan McLaren said today a nurse had described Mrs Everitt's condition as "fairly satisfactory".
She had been moved into a general ward today, and Ms McLaren believed she was being monitored with round-the-clock nursing care.
Mrs Everitt's daughter Trish Cameron said yesterday her mother was covered in hundreds of welts, and a nurse had counted 50 stings on one shin alone.
The stroke had also affected one side of her face, Ms Cameron said.
