Schools are being urged to take a hard line with 18-year-old students who are drinking during school hours.
The warning comes after it was revealed Wellington High School pupils have been drinking alcohol during their lunch hour at Massey University's Tussock cafe.
Secondary Principals' Association president Peter Gall says just as it is unacceptable to drink during work hours in most workplaces, it should be the same in schools.
He said with the mind-altering effects of alcohol, he doubts students would be tuned in to study after they have been drinking.
