Canterbury health authorities have issued a warning after potentially toxic blue-green algae was found in the Selwyn River near a campsite.
Environment Canterbury is monitoring the river, by the Glentunnel campsite, 63km west of Christchurch, after discovering the algae (benthic cyanobacteria).
The algae could produce toxins harmful to humans and animals, Canterbury medical officer of health Alistair Humphrey said.
Exposure to the toxins could cause skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, tingling and numbness around the mouth and fingertips.
People should seek immediate medical attention if they experienced any symptoms and animals should be taken to a vet.
Environment Canterbury scientist David Kelly said the health warning was a precautionary measure as it couldn't confirm the presence of any toxins in the river until it received test results.
Environment Canterbury checks the Selwyn River weekly during summer to monitor cyanobacteria levels.
